After spending about two days flying to Japan from the UK, I finally arrived in Kagoshima on Tuesday evening and went straight to bed.
On Wednesday morning, we went for breakfast at a really lovely German-inspired bakery called Backen.
You just go up to the counter and choose from the amazing selection of baked goods.
I went for these:
The one on the left (my favourite) had a gingery paste underneath the cheese and spring onions. The one on the right was a cheese and onion gratin with a sprinkling of sweetcorn on top. The food was delicious!
After breakfast we walked to Iso Beach (it was quite far – I would recommend getting the bus…). The beach overlooked the Sakurajima Volcano. It was quite a cloudy day but still an impressive site.
In the evening we went for dinner at Kagomma Furuvato Food Village. It was an open air area consisting of lots little food stalls which mainly sold foods local to Kagoshima.
After randomly selecting a stall, we ended up at one which did various foods deep fried (classic Scot) and served on sticks. We got some fish balls and a selection of skewers including shitake mushroom, aubergine and a cheese and fish sausage!
There were a lot more but they got eaten up before I remembered to take a photo.
The next day we went to another bakery for breakfast! This one was called Toit Vert and had an overwhelming amount of selection (these photos only show about half the amount of baked goods on offer!).
After breakfast we headed towards the ferry to visit Sakurajima Island (the island with the volcano). While walking towards the ferry, we suddenly realised we had all been dusted with a sprinkling of ash! It turns out this was from a volcanic eruption! The ash got everywhere – in our eyes, ears, mouths, bags, fingernails. You can see the volcanic plume in the photo below.
Nevertheless, we continued heading towards the island. Sakurajima Island is really quite an incredible place. Throughout the day there were five more volcanic eruptions, even while we were on the island. Life there has developed to coexist with the active volcano. Children even have to wear helmets when they walk to school to protect their heads from volcanic debris.
And to make Sakurajima Island even cooler, the island is the proud home of the world’s biggest radish!
Once we got back to Kagoshima we got ourselves a bite to eat at a ramen place called Tmtrmstr. As soon as we entered the restaurant we were faced with what was, at the time, an incredibly stressful and confusing challenge, this:
I must have taken quite a while using this to order food; in the end one of the waitresses came to help me out. After saying cheese to one another repeatedly, I just about managed to order a tomato ramen bowl with a large heap of cheese and a boiled egg.
I also ended up with this cheese spring roll which I seemed to accidentally order…
It was a delicious meal and I would really recommend Tmtrmnstr despite the panic faced while ordering.
I also saw a truck in a truck in a truck.
And now to take my first high speed bullet train to Hiroshima.
