I bet you’re all sick of hearing about all the amazing sights in Japan by now, so I’ll move onto the good stuff. The food!
In this post, I’m going to share some of the amazing meals I’ve had in Tokyo. Reading on may cause hunger…
I thought I’d start off with a Japanese classic: ramen! This isn’t any old ramen though. Afuri Ramen is unique for their speciality yuzu ramen. Yuzu is an incredibly fragrant citrus fruit which adds a good zing to the ramen broth.
I went for a chicken ramen bowl with the essential addition of yuzu.
You can’t beat a bowl of ramen with an egg on top! The broth was light, zingy and delicious. I even had a go at slurping it up like a local.
Ikinari Steak is incredible! It’s an affordable, fast-paced, standing steak restaurant. From the moment you step inside the restaurant, it’s as if everything happens at the speed of light.
On arrival, you are given an apron and a place to stand. Next thing you know a sizzling, cast iron plate containing thick slices of steak and juicy sweetcorn arrives in front of you. You then pour over some of the house sauce which quickly evaporates, adding extra flavour and prolongs that sizzle.
There’s an exciting selection of condiments lined up in front of you. They are labelled in Japanese so giving them all a go seemed like the only option. You also get a plate of rice, some miso soup and a salad on the side.
Ikinari Steak has a really fun, casual atmosphere and the steak is delicious and melts in your mouth. You can certainly tell I enjoyed it.
Our visit to the Roppongi district of Tokyo was hijacked when we came across the Fukushima Festival held at Roppongi Hills.
After having a brief browse of the numerous food stalls, we knew we had to stay for a bite to eat.
I went for a scallop dish. It was a scallop shell containing a few scallops, prawns and broccoli, with a delicious cheesy topping and garlic butter. It was grilled for a while before being finished off with a blowtorch!
This has the potential to be one of my favourite dishes in Japan! As always, the seafood was sensational and super fresh.
Tsukiji Fish Market
We tried to visit the Tsukiji Fish Market a couple of times but managed to time it wrong both times. On the second occasion, at least, we visited the Outside Market. In my opinion, it was still rather impressive (although not on the same scale as the actual market).
These are some epic slabs of tuna.
I was especially pleased at getting a sashimi breakfast!
As much as I have been loving all the Japanese food, it is difficult to resist a good burger. At Brozers’ we had an incredibly good burger!
The menu gives so many different topping options that it almost becomes a challenge to pick the best combo. I went for a cheeseburger topped with egg and mushrooms which came with fries and onion rings.
It was an extremely good decision.
The whole concoction was expertly stacked. The burger itself was juicy and perfectly complimented by all the delicious toppings. The crunchy onion rings completed the meal.
Definitely a success.
I’m going to move on from that amazing burger to Japan’s answer to McDonald’s. MOS Burger is as abundant in Japan as McDonald’s is in the UK.
Curious to see what it had to offer, I was keen to visit. I ordered a spicy MOS cheeseburger which is a cheeseburger topped with jalapenos and a chilli sauce. It also came with a mixture of fries and onion rings.
As you can see from the photo, the burger isn’t quite the same calibre as Brozers’ but it was pretty good for fast food. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of heat in the chilli sauce. Also the burger comes in a little paper bag to make it easier to eat. The Japanese really do know how to make life more efficient!
Sanuki Udon Hanamaru
On the subject of fast food, I will now introduce Sanuki Udon Hanamaru. You can get a big, steaming bowl of noodle soup in under a minute.
When you go in, you pick up a tray and help yourself to a piece of tempura from the counter before ordering your bowl of udon.
I picked up some seafood tempura and ordered a beef udon bowl with an egg. Once it had been whipped up, I sprinkled on some tempura pieces, chilli, ginger and dried bonito.
Cheap, quick and very delicious!
Food courts are a popular concept in Japan and provide a bit more selection than the Burger King and Subway type places we are used to. There is something for everyone and the food served up is of a high quality.
On one occasion, we decided to try out a gyoza place. We ordered a selection of gyoza and some fried chicken.
Whilst the gyoza was tasty, that chicken was absolutely delicious! It was tangy, sweet and salty all at the same time. It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Japanese cuisine, but the Japanese really know how to fry up some chicken.
Roll Ice Cream
Roll ice cream has been quite a big food trend recently so it’s no surprise I would find it in Tokyo.
Roll ice cream basically entails mushing ice cream with a topping, laying it out flat and then curling it up into rolls. The ice cream rolls are then sprinkled with toppings.
I went for a “honey flash”.
Vanilla ice cream crushed with Graham crackers and topped with walnuts, marshmallows, honey and whipped cream. It was tasty but perhaps too lengthy a process for what you got in the end.
As is probably evident from this blog, food has been my highlight of Japan. The cuisine is endless, offering so much to choose from (I actually had to make a list to ensure I didn’t miss anything out). Japan is often regarded as expensive but I’ve found the food quite reasonably priced in comparison to the UK. So everyone, please go to Japan and please eat everything!
